IITA's Ramp Traffic and Ground Handling Technician Programme is a comprehensive vocational qualification approved by the Portuguese Ministry of Education that takes students from no prior aviation experience to full ramp operational competence.
The programme covers aircraft marshalling, ground support equipment operation, cargo handling, dangerous goods, load planning principles, and the regulatory framework that governs safe ramp operations across European airports.
With an optional placement at a European air base, this programme offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world sector experience and launch a solid career.

What a Ramp Traffic and Ground Handling Technician Does
Ramp technicians are in sustained demand across European airports. As aviation traffic continues to grow, the shortage of trained, qualified ground handling professionals represents one of the sector's most significant operational challenges.
The Ramp Traffic and Ground Handling Technician programme covers the full operational scope of the role:
✈️ Aircraft marshalling Safe guidance of aircraft on the apron using standard ICAO signalling and procedures
✈️ Ground support equipment Operation of pushback tractors, belt loaders, aircraft stairs, GPU units, and other GSE
✈️ Cargo and baggage handling Loading, unloading, and securing cargo and baggage in accordance with load plans and weight limits
✈️ Dangerous goods IATA DGR Category 10 awareness and acceptance procedures for ground handling operations
✈️ Ramp safety FOD prevention, apron driving regulations, personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures
✈️ Turnaround coordination Multi-provider coordination to deliver on-time aircraft turnarounds within airline ground time windows

No. The programme is designed for candidates with no prior aviation background and starts from first principles.

The programme includes an optional industry placement. IITA actively supports students in identifying and securing placement opportunities with our ground handling and airport industry partners.

Minimum secondary education completion (Year 12 or equivalent) is required. English proficiency at CEFR B1 or above is recommended. Contact us for full entry requirements.
