THE IITA STORY
Some institutions teach aviation. IITA was built from within it.
IITA - the International Institute for Tourism & Aviation - was established in London in 2012. Not by academics looking in, but by aviation professionals who understood precisely what the industry needed and found that the education system was not delivering it. That gap — between what schools taught and what employers actually required — became IITA's founding purpose, and it remains our driving force today.

In the years that followed, IITA developed and delivered specialist ground operations training to more than 200 professionals, collaborating with internationally recognised institutions including Kingston College, Fight for Peace Academy, London Design and Engineering University Technical College, and the Shanghai Aviation Service School. Industry partnerships with Menzies Aviation, Swissport, and SHP ensured that every curriculum element reflected real operational demands.
In 2022, IITA brought its proven model to Portugal, becoming the country's first and only specialist pioneer in vocational aviation training. With Ministry of Education approval secured, IITA began embedding its programmes into Portuguese vocational schools — and the results have been transformative.

Active, Integrative, Industry-led
IITA does not deliver standardised, off-the-shelf education. Every programme is built on three principles:
How We Work

1. Operational Expertise at the Core

Our instructors are not career academics. They are active or recently retired aviation professionals — ground operations specialists, licensed aircraft mechanics, airline safety managers, and air traffic veterans — who bring genuine, current industry knowledge into every classroom.

2. Immersive, Hands-On Learning

IITA students do not read about aviation - they experience it. Our programmes incorporate simulator sessions, real-aircraft familiarisation, virtual reality training environments, and supervised operational visits to working airports and airline facilities.
3. Direct Industry Integration
Every IITA programme is co-developed with industry partners. This means our curriculum evolves in real time with the industry itself — ensuring that when a student completes their training, what they know is exactly what employers need.

Our Ambition

The aviation industry will need more than 800,000 new professionals over the next two decades, according to industry forecasts. Europe, and Portugal in particular, faces a significant shortfall. IITA's mission is not simply to train individuals — it is to build the talent infrastructure that Portugal's aviation industry will depend on.
With 20 schools projected by 2030, degree-level and postgraduate programmes in development, and an international reach already proven in the United Kingdom and China, IITA is positioned to become Europe's defining institution for vocational and specialist aviation education.

When was IITA founded and what is its background?

IITA (International Institute for Tourism & Aviation) was founded in London, UK in 2012 and established in Portugal in 2022. The UK operation trained over 200 aviation professionals in specialist ground operations programmes, working with partners including Menzies Aviation and Swissport. IITA is widely recognised as Portugal’s first and only pioneer specialist in vocational aviation training.

Is IITA approved by the Portuguese Ministry of Education?

Yes. IITA’s vocational programmes are approved by Portugal’s Ministry of Education. They are delivered within the national secondary education framework, enabling students to complete their Year 10 to Year 12 studies while simultaneously earning an industry-recognised professional qualification in aviation.
