AERONAUTICAL ENGLISH — FOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS
ICAO LPR
Levels 4–6 development
6
ICAO LPR descriptors addressed
Yes. ICAO Annex 1 requires that air traffic controllers who communicate in English on international frequencies demonstrate English proficiency at Level 4 or above. Most European ANSPs require Level 4 as a minimum, with many positions requiring Level 5.
Level 4 (Operational) requires re-assessment every three years. Level 5 (Extended) extends validity to six years. Level 6 (Expert) requires no re-assessment. Higher levels also signal a greater capacity to handle complex communications, which is valued in senior and specialist ATC roles.
A minimum of CEFR B2 is recommended for this programme. Candidates below that level should contact us to discuss options.
