With the increasing complexity of air operations, the role of the Flight Operations Officer is central to aviation safety and efficiency. This professional assists in flight planning at all levels, providing continuous monitoring and advising pilots on meteorological, technical, or route changes. Our programme offers the indispensable theoretical and technical training to obtain the Flight Operations Officer Licence, certified by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC).
To guarantee excellence in teaching, each class is strictly limited to a maximum of twelve students. Furthermore, the course ensures a practical internship at the end of the theoretical training, allowing you to consolidate your knowledge in a real operational environment.
With an optional placement at a European air base, this programme offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world sector experience and launch a solid career.
Course Structure and Composition
The training has an estimated duration of seven months of theoretical instruction, followed by ninety working days of practical internship.
Theoretical Instruction: The syllabus covers all critical areas for performing the role, including Aviation Legislation, Aircraft General Knowledge, Mass and Balance, Performance and Flight Planning, Meteorology, General Navigation and Radio Navigation, Operational Procedures and Principles of Flight, Psychology, and Communications.
Note: Mathematics and Physics modules are included as a pre-course for candidates who do not have a 12th-grade equivalent in these subjects.
Complementary Aeronautical Training: In addition to the technical foundation, the course includes Dispatch Resource Management (DRM), Dangerous Goods, Aviation Security, and Intensive Internship Preparation.

Admission Requirements
To enrol in the FOO Certification, candidates must:
- be eighteen years of age by the date of licence issuance
- hold a upper secondary school diploma ( Year 12) with subjects including Maths and Physics (or have the minimum compulsory education and demonstrate knowledge in these subjects through the preparatory module)
- demonstrate minimum English proficiency at level B1 or B2 ( ICAO Level 4).

The FOO is responsible for preparing and monitoring the flight plan. They analyse the weather, calculate the most efficient and safe route, determine the required amount of fuel, and monitor the flight from start to finish, maintaining constant communication with the aircraft commander.

The theoretical component is taught in person at AWA’s facilities, located at Rua 1º de Maio, 8 – Prior Velho, in Lisbon. The internship will take place at a partner airline’s facilities.

Yes — the internship is lasts about 3 months (90 days). The placement provides genuine hands-on experience in a live aviation environment. We currently have active partnerships with EuroAtlantic, Spring Jet, SATA Regional, SATA International, Net Jets White, LuxAviation, PrimeSlot, Orion-Jets (TAESPEJO) and OMNI Executive Aviation, among others.

The internship is mandatory, and available for all trainees who pass the internal theoretical exams, as well as the nine CAA exam papers, and who demonstrate the required English language proficiency.
