PILOT RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION PREPARATION COURSE [APPLA]

The technical skill that earns your licence gets you to the door. What IITA prepares you for is what happens on the other side of it.
Airline Selection Is a Skill. Land Your Dream Job.
Commercial pilot selection processes at European airlines are rigorous, structured, and increasingly competitive
Candidates who have not experienced an assessment centre, a structured simulator evaluation, or a competency-based HR interview are at a significant disadvantage regardless of their flying hours or their licence grade.
IITA's Pilot Recruitment and Selection Preparation Course promoted in partnership with APPLA is designed to close that gap. It gives you a clear understanding of what European airline selection processes involve, what assessors are looking for at each stage, and how to present your competencies, your personality, and your potential in the way that career-ready pilots do.
With an optional placement at a European air base, this programme offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world sector experience and launch a solid career.

What Airline Selection Actually Involves
Candidates who have prepared specifically for airline selection processes perform measurably better at every stage not because they are better pilots, but because they understand what is being assessed and how to demonstrate it.
European airline selection typically involves multiple stages, each designed to assess a different dimension of candidate suitability:
✈️ Psychometric testing Numerical, verbal, and abstract reasoning assessments, plus personality profiling
✈️ Group exercises Collaborative problem-solving scenarios assessing crew resource management behaviours
✈️ Simulator evaluations Basic handling assessments and multi-crew exercises where behavioural competencies matter as much as technical skill
✈️ Competency-based interviews Structured questioning requiring specific, evidenced examples of key pilot competencies
✈️ HR and motivational interviews Assessment of cultural fit, career motivation, and communication skills
✈️ English language assessment Proficiency evaluation relevant to ICAO LPR standards
Loadmasters work across a wide range of aviation operations:
✈️ Air cargo companies Handling of valuable or dangerous goods (eg, DHL Adviation, FedEx)
✈️ Commercial airlines Cargo and baggage management (eg, TAP Air Cargo, Luthansa Cargo)
✈️ Military forces Coordination of military equipment transport, tactical airdrops, and humanitarian airlifts
✈️ Humanitarian organisations Transport of essential supplies for disaster relief and emergency operations worldwide
IITA's Pilot Recruitment and Selection Preparation Course, promoted in partnership with APPLA, gives aspiring airline pilots the assessment insight, simulator preparation, and interview coaching needed to perform confidently across every stage of the European airline selection process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

APPLA is the Portuguese Airline Pilots’ Association and one of IITA’s institutional partners. It is an independent, non-profit professional association representing over 1,700 Portuguese airline pilots. APPLA is dedicated to advancing aviation safety, upholding the standards of the pilot profession, and representing its members across national and international aviation bodies. APPLA’s endorsement lends this course’s design and content professional credibility and industry alignment.

APPLA’s endorsement accredits IITA’s Pilot Recruitment and Selection Preparation Course is grounded in the current realities of the industry: the actual assessment criteria used by European carriers, the competencies that airline assessors evaluate, and the standards that working pilots know from direct professional experience. This is not a generic assessment centre training.

The programme is designed for CPL and ATPL holders, as well as candidates completing ab initio programmes who have an upcoming selection process. Cadets in the final stages of training may also benefit — contact us to discuss your stage.

No preparation programme can guarantee selection outcomes. This course improves your understanding of the process, your ability to present your competencies, and your confidence under assessment conditions — all of which measurably improve performance.
